ROLES FOR ADVISORS

During the weekend we ask our advisors to be an active part of the program by taking on one of the following roles

                                                                                                                                                    

COMMITTEE ADVISORS

WHEN WILL I DO THIS?   

  • Friday afternoon from 3:30pm to 8:00pm 

WHAT WILL I DO? 

  • Be in the committee room and make sure the committee chairs run the Public Hearings, and then Work Sessions correctly. 
  • Make sure that every member of the committee is able to speak and have input. 
  • Ensure that the committee is following the parlimentary procedure and Youth and Government procedures.  
  • Make sure that every bill gets a recommendation at the end of Work Sessions

WHERE WILL I DO IT? 

  • You will be assigned to one of the 9 committees

SPECIAL INFORMATION

  • We ask the Advisors to not become actively involved in discussion and debate unless you see the process getting out of bounds.   
  • To give input about ideas for amendments is fine but shouldn't be influencing the debate and discussion.
  • Be in the room the entire time
  • Make sure the group breaks for dinner at the correct time
  • Dismiss committee on schedule not too early

 

MEDIA ADVISOR

WHEN WILL I DO THIS?   

  • Friday afternoon until Sunday morning --All weekend 

WHAT WILL I DO? 

  • Work with editors to develop the Newspaper
  • Read articles that are written to make sure they are appropriate for the Youth and Government Program
  • Make sure the newspaper office and staff are professional
  • Help make sure newspapers get printed (Friday night, Saturday Afternoon, and Sunday at the closing session)

WHERE WILL I DO IT? 

  • Newspaper and Media have an office on the first floor of State House.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

  • Feel free to be active with the group with ideas for articles, suggestions for the way articles are written
  • Make sure that everyone on the media staff is engaged and active during the weekend
  • Don't allow Media office to be a place for kids to hang out rather than being involved.

 

PRESIDENT OR SPEAKER ADVISOR

WHEN WILL I DO THIS?   

  • Saturday all day and Sunday morning.

WHAT WILL I DO? 

  • Sit with the Speaker or President off to the side
  • Help them if they get stuck on a procedural element
  • Help them keep control of the body 

WHERE WILL I DO IT? 

  • Sitting upfront in the House and Senate off to the side of the presiding officer.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

  • You don't have to be an expert in Parliamentary Procedure, only assist leadership in finding the correct direction. 
  • You aren't going to do this all weekend, we can tag team and get folks in the role every couple of hours.

 

 

LEGISLATION ADVISOR

WHEN WILL I DO THIS?   

  • Saturday all day and Sunday morning.

WHAT WILL I DO? 

  • Work with the Director of Legislation to track all the bills
  • Make sure all bills get to the House and Senate to start
  • Make sure the Director of Legislation keeps the chart of bills updated
  • Sunday morning work to make sure that Non-Concurrent matters and vetoes get handled correctly
  • Make sure every bill gets heard on the floor of House and Senate at least 1 time.

WHERE WILL I DO IT? 

  • Director of Legislation will work in the rotunda on the third floor and in Governor's Office.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

  • You will be helping the Director of Legislation keep track of bills all weekend, once you get them prepared should be able to step away until they have a problem.
  • Sunday morning is keep time to make sure we keep House and Senate busy, and that all bills get through both bodies at least 1 time
  • Non-Cons and Vetoes are used to fill in both houses.

 

 

GOVERNOR AND CABINET ADVISOR

WHEN WILL I DO THIS?   

  • All weekend.

WHAT WILL I DO? 

  • Work with Youth Governor to make sure they have a legislative package and plan 
  • Help Cabinet develop plans for what bills to testify on at Public Hearings
  • Have the Cabinet work on Legislative package all weekend.
  • Help Governor with how to get amendments made on floor of House and Senate
  • Keep Cabinet engaged all weekend.

WHERE WILL I DO IT? 

  • Youth Governor's Office

SPECIAL INFORMATION

  • You won't have to spend every minute with the cabinet but be a resource so they have someone to keep them on task
